Can We Make It Better? Part 1: Oura's Sleep Screen
Oura is being sued over its sleep staging. So I rebuilt its sleep screen from my own Garmin data, and checked 54 nights.

Can We Make It Better? is a five-part series where we rebuild the premium features of popular fitness apps using data you already own.
Oura is being sued over how accurate its sleep staging actually is.
That got me curious, so I went poking at my own Garmin data. It turns out my sleep stages had been sitting in a file on my computer this whole time. Every minute of every night. I'd never once looked at them.
The rebuild
I had Claude build the sleep screen from that data: time asleep, the stage chart across the whole night, deep/light/REM, plus HRV, resting heart rate and skin temperature.

What 54 nights revealed
Then I had it check one more thing across all 54 nights of data:
My deep sleep ranged from 5% to 37%.
My REM ranged from 3% to 33%.
Same watch, same wrist, same guy.
Every one of these devices is guessing your sleep stages from heart rate, movement and temperature, Garmin included. Trend the score week to week, and hold the deep/REM split loosely.
If you've already connected your Garmin, this data is on your machine right now.
